Chief of Misfits

Over the course of a week, Ronen slowly faded into one of the cave sprites. Passing time by carrying out tasks, quiet and unseen. One day everyone would forget his name, and eventually he would too. That did not seem like a terrible death. To dissolve back into the universe he came from, the footprints of his existence whisked away by the wind.

It sounded better than being a spectacle. Everyone cheering as his kind was finally eradicated once and for all. So, until the day they came for him, Ronen would be here. Building pathetic furniture and eating more greens than anyone ever should.

Fallon stopped him from leaving Elphyne for a reason. He just wished the gods had sent someone a little nicer to steer him back on track. Ronen had been chasing after nothing when he tried to run away, and he still was. Still searching for a light he would never find. A moth cast in darkness.

On the nights he was too tired to throw a pity party for himself, he would enter the untouched bathing chamber. Fully clothed, with tears dripping down his cheeks like the condensation on the stone walls.

Every time he even considered getting in, he felt rods being slammed down on his knuckles. The hot breath of people shouting in his ear, and the guilt that crumpled him up from the inside. Eventually, he could no longer stomach the sight of his own reflection. The door to that bathing chamber did not open again.

When the morning finally came, he accepted his breakfast and to-do list from Elma with a fake smile. Ronen enjoyed listening to the girls laugh while he worked. They collected leaves to propagate and wrote labels for jars. He will admit, it was nice to see Fallon start to loosen up, as their future depended on it. He was reminded of that with every meal as he watched her stubbornly refuse to talk to her flower buds. How could she do that? After a full day of sanding down tree scraps and sorting nails, he was famished.

Which was why whenever he could sneak it, Ronen kept one of his dinner rolls in his pocket. If he set it on his bed and politely asked the ghost butler to take it to her chamber, it was usually gone when he came back. He hoped it was working and they were not just stealing it for themselves. But Ronen didn’t think ghosts had stomachs.

Why was he doing it? He had no clue. Ronen had no clue why he ran after Fallon with the Centaurs, or why he even helped them from the Entrance Tree in the first place.

Ronen has spent too much time in his own head lately. He did not want to kick off his shoes and get comfortable in there, not yet. Because yes, he was frustrated and upset, but above everything Ronen felt lost. How could he be mad he couldn’t leave the cave, when he had nowhere to go anyways?

At least he knew how to do this one thing.
